Are cingular/at&t and t-mobile phones interchangeable?

i am currently an at&t user and i'm looking for a new phone, i really resembling the sidekick, but it's from t-mobile. can i get one voice off ebay and later use my cingular sim card in it?

If it's unlocked you can. But be aware that more habitually that not, if you get a phone branded by another company, when you unlock it and try to use it beside anther carrier, some option won't work (internet, multi media messaging, etc) unless you reconfigure the internal settings and IP address, stuff approaching that.
