Can an iPhone bought in the US be used surrounded by Europe?

I want to buy the new iPhone for a friend within Spain... anyone has an answer?
Answers: Yes you can. But the problem is that the iPhone will be exclusive to Cingular, which funds it will be locked to work only beside Cingular SIM Cards. Unlocking the phone may be hard but for impossible for some time after it comes out. Also keep within mind that your friend in Spain will not be capable of take authority of the 3G Networks, due to the difference in the frequencies of the phone. It will work fine on GSM but not on 3G. In the US Cingular's 3G operate at 1900Mhz, while All over the world the 3G operates at 2100Mhz. Also since it will be Cingular branded phone it will hold the settings for Cingular’s access points, in other words your friend won’t know how to connect to the internet if he/she uses GPRS or EDGE (unless he/she edits the access points). He/she should still know how to use the Wi-Fi to connect to the internet.It's not even out yet...I don't assume anyone could have a true answer to that examine. That said, it utilizes GSM technology which means that a sim card is required to be paid the phone work. If you sent it to your friend it may work with a Spanish sim card, however, they may use different band in Spain. I believe single a quad band phone will work within Europe and the United States. I don't know that those sorts of details have be released yet for the iPhone. I'd hold past its sell-by date before pre-ordering one until these details can be ascertained.
