What are the benefits of buying an unlocked iphones verses an locked iphone never removed from covering?

depends on what you want your iphone to do for you. some of the special features won't work, like ocular voice mail. some of the features won't work if you are using the unlocked phone beside a carrier except AT&T, because the other carriers don't submission them or support them for the iphone. however, the basic stuff, which is probably why you want the iphone - the ipod, camera (which is in truth pretty good), basic calling and touch-sensitive blind should work fine on either manner of iphone.
the unlocked phone will free you to be able to use it on any GSM shipper, which is not so with the unlocked one. however even next to the locked phone you can opt for a contract according to your desire - 1yr, 2yr or no contract commitment, it is my understanding that the phone costs like peas in a pod regardless.
you should go to the iphone website and check out adjectives the features of the phone and then find out which of these features are usable on the unlocked one and resolve if you can do without that part or not.
an unlocked phone can never be updated. the apple's updates which can be transfered to the iphone via i tunes, when meeting an unlocked computer, will lock it again and you will enjoy to follow a whole procedure to own your phone back working. those updates though, can fix bugs, issues and add on features to the iphone.
