The iPod or iPhone video format is mp4 (mpeg4) and there are rather a few freeware that will convert certain files approaching avi and mpg into the format. However, I do not know any that will convert a ripped DVD (I am not even sure what file format that would be in).

Handbrake can rip DVDs for iPod use. I use iSquint to convert my videos for iPod, but it's Mac single.
