If I buy the 1st gen. iPhone will I be able to purchase the 2nd gen. when it comes out if still underneath contract

Lets say I buy it when it comes out. I am locked into the 2 yr contract. If the 2nd gen iPhone comes out previously my contract is up can I still get the strange version and basically extend my contract?

ANYONE can upgrade to an iPhone at any time.
