Is it true that you can only put iTunes songs on your iPhone?

Does that be going to cds that I actually own a physical copy of, I inevitability to buy again through iTunes?

Answers:    Nope. The iPhone is actually a subsequent generation iPod near a phone built in. Or as Steve Jobs said, "The best iPod ever near a built in Phone".

That way you'll be able to sync your existing iTunes library beside your iPhone just close to your iPod. Any songs you ripped from CD can also be transfered over. Basically anything you may enjoy in your iPod presently, you can also put on your iPhone.
I think you can merely sync it with Itunes until a hack comes out. I infer that it will sync with any record in your Itunes library so you should be capable of put CDs on it.
