How come populace are selling iPhone 3g's on ebay when you own to sign up for a contract at the store?

i don't know what is going on there, but i was planning to buy this phone.

If you buy it off eBay you move about to a shop.. get a sim and then put credit on it.. that's what i'd assume. Quite simple really. If you are on contract and due an upgrade and dont like the iphone,you take it and put up for sale it.I would do the same and keep my Nokia n95. Its a much better phone.i would say it be because they are crazy or maybe they just resembling having a 2 year contract they would have to take-home pay for or pay the cancellation fees.
so society can use them with their current At&T contract instead of paying the WOWZA 400+$ to get a different one...and its ebay for god sakeslol
