Hmm, If a network in the UK have given you the iPhone on a contract, it obviously isn't for a "3G" usage. Once the 3G iPhone is out your current network can bequeath you the iPhone but you'd have to get that for an extra charge or by doing an rash upgrade ( assuming that you having an iPhone have merely bought a new contract or upgraded ). What i'd suggest you is move on to Network "3" (once we hold the 3G iPhone) if you want "3G" services.
