iPhone minus Phone Service?
I am considering an iPhone for my daughter (rather than an iTouch) mainly because it has all the features of the iTouch but also have a camera, which I know she'll enjoy. She's too young for a phone, so we wouldn't need to trigger a phone plan.
I'm wondering if all of the iPhone features (internet via WiFi, IM, music, video, etc) will work if we do not activate the phone via AT&T or another carrier. I'd expect adjectives the features except Phone to work as I presume they do on the iTouch.
Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, everything will work without any phone contract.
However you cannot buy it from apple or at&t without the 2 yrs contract. It is part of their policy.
So you can singular buy it from ebay, amazon or craiglist. If you do that, you can just buy the unlock or jailbroken iphone 2g/3g and you can use the phone feature without the plan.
Mobile features such as Pay as you jump will work for it.
First of all, there is no such thing as an iTouch. It is an iPod Touch. Do you phone iPod nanos "iNanos"? What about "iClassic" or "iFifthGeneration"? No.
To answer your question, you can go to an Apple Store or command an iPhone online. Obviously you're going to have to take it to an AT&T store to activate it, but you don't HAVE to... lately don't tell Apple :)
I would really reccomend the iPod touch instead of the iPhone, it doesn't have a camera but it's a lot cheaper. Why rubbish a whole bunch of money buying equipment you don't need? By equipment I mean phone capability, such as the 3G network thing and the telephone stuff. Try ebay and you can probably find some first age group iPhones for dirt cheap.
